The team of authors presents an architectural vision of a world where the majority of the population lives in nearly self-sufficient cities, supported by advanced technologies that provide better living conditions and a high-quality environment. This vision involves relocating and transforming parts of agriculture, water sourcing, and energy production to be closer to urban populations, thereby enhancing the quality of urban life and significantly reducing transportation demands. Project BIOM is built upon this vision, proposing an architectural concept that leverages contemporary technologies to achieve these objectives. It primarily addresses architecture, urbanism, and resource supply in these future megacities. The challenges faced by large cities are not new, which is why the authors draw on existing research, scientific literature, and insights from respected experts. This topic is intimately connected to the development of civilization and raises questions that society will need to address. We are committed to sustainable urban development. Our goal is to transform cities into self-sufficient entities that effectively meet today’s challenges. Our vision and practices are detailed in the book "BIOM," which compiles the outcomes of our seven-year research. Currently, we are focused on the development and implementation of BIOM systems—innovative solutions that enable homes or cities to produce local sources of water, food, and energy with minimal environmental impact. We utilize state-of-the-art technologies such as hydroponics and aquaponics, maximizing the use of renewable energy sources. Our solutions are designed to be scalable, from individual homes to entire city blocks, allowing for seamless integration into existing buildings. At the BIOM Research Project, we are dedicated to creating greener, more sustainable urban environments that promote local production and consumption, reduce traffic congestion, and pave the way for a consumption-based and sustainable lifestyle.
