The course focuses on an insurance system as one of the most interesting parts of the financial market. It provides students with basic knowledge of the insurance theory, individual types of insurance and principles of functioning of an insurance company as a commercial financial institution. Emphasis is put mainly on the problems of the Czech insurance market. The course can be regarded as the basis of studies that every graduate of university of economics should be acquainted with. The course enables students to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge more easily when solving practical decisive problems.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Acquired knowledge will enable students to define and characterise insurance, define relation between insurance and risk, risk management and risk classification. Students will be made familiar with insurance relations and principles of insurance companies. They will learn how to explain the essentials of risks of insurance, define and enumerate fields of insurance, insurance groups and insured products. Students will be able to enumerate and explain the roles of commercial insurance company, characterize insurance activities of insurance companies and all relevant activities. The course will provide them with basic information about insurance sector as a branch of economy and about insurance market and its segmentation. Emphasis is put on basic principles of functioning of the insurance market in the Czech Republic and indices of its level. Students will be also made familiar with legal regulations applicable to the insurance in the Czech Republic. They will have a structural overview of the subject-matter necessary for other follow-up courses.

Prerequisites

The course is intended as an introductory course to the studies of insurance and insurance systems, and widens the basic knowledge of students.
Successful completion is conditional on the basic knowledge in the field of economy of enterprises and awareness of macroeconomic situation in the Czech Republic. Basic knowledge in the field of law is also expected.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To get for the credit it is required to carry out the articles as follows:
- to work up and to deliver an elaborate on given topic,
- to pass a written test succesfully (60%),
Both articles have to be fulfilled together.

Introduction to the course. Risk and insurance – basic terms, classification of risks, approach of entrepreneurs and management to risks; risk management; possibilities of financial backing of risks. Insurance – characteristics; insurance relation; insurance today; interest in insurance. Classification of insurance – basic classification of insurance; branches of insurance. Non-life insurance – insurance of property, insurance of liability for damage. Life insurance as one of the pillars in the system of social security. Reinsurance and its tasks; forms of reinsurance; co-insurance; reinsurance contract; significance of reinsurance. Commercial insurance company – reinsurance activities (administration of insurance; liquidation of insurance events); other activities. Legal norms in insurance systems – Act 363/1999 Coll. on insurance as amended in subsequent directives; Act 37/2004 Coll. on contracts of insurance ; Act 38/2004 Coll. on insurance mediators and assessor of risks of insurance events. Insurance as a branch of economy – insurance supervision; reinsurance companies; insurance mediators; associations of insurance companies; international institutions; green card office board. Insurance market – segmentation of insurance market; indices of level of insurance market; insurance market in the Czech Republic; investment activity of commercial insurance companies.

Aims

The objective of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge and information in the insurance sector. Students will be made familiar with the theory of insurance and insurance sector, and also with the latest pieces of knowledge in the field. Emphasis is put on the principles of functioning of commercial insurance companies in the environment of the market economy. Lectures are focused on basic principles of the insurance sector, as well as on more detailed issues with respect to legal regulations and current economic development in the Czech Republic.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is compulsory. Active work in the seminars and preparation for discussions with respect to the solved topics are regularly checked together with the attendance. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory but is recommended.
