The course is intended to teach English as the second foreign language at general level. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace and simple grammar for everyday communication.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for false beginners and for beginners who attended and successfully completed the course “English for Beginners” in the previous semester. The course follows up on the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired. It therefore requires knowledge of English pronunciation, basic grammar and vocabulary.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively and worked out all assigned tasks for self-study. Students have to pass a credit test reaching 60% points as minimum.

1. U1 Úvod. Opakování (pronunciation, intonation). Getting to know people.
2. U1 Present Simple (I, you, we, they). Communication.
3. U1 Introductions, greetings, goodbyes.
4. U2 Lifestyles. Present Simple (he, she, it). Adverbs of frequency.
5. U2 Numbers. Telling the time.
6. U2 Time expressions. Telephoning.
7. U3 Workplaces. There is, there are. Some, any.
8. U3 Have, have got. Prepositions.
9. U3 Asking for and giving instructions. Asking for travel information.
10. U4 The road to success. Past Simple. Regular and irregular verbs.
11. U4 Travel for work.
12. U4 Telephoning. Leaving a message. Spelling.
13. Revision, credit test

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks, such as describing problems or giving instructions, that arise in a wide range of economic occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students’ attendance and their work are systematically controlled. Most of the study is organized as self-study.
