Problems of inner cities

The subject analyses the role and the significance of urban centre in the framework of the urban organism. The development of functional and spatial changes of urban centres in historical periods, and the views on their concepts and solutions, are documented in detail. Emphasis is put on the specific role of the urban core in relation to the central zone and its spatial delimitation, and on the necessity of the core's gradual regeneration. In concrete examples is analysed the present development of the urban centre, its prospective role in the urban organism and the proposed changes of its functional and spatial organisation. Considered are also the prospective extent and organisation of the pedestrian zone, with view to the size and extent of the urban centre and the location of the town's historical attractions and social and production activities.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

By completing the study of the subject, the students gain an overview of the centre's role and significance in the urban organism, of the development of functional and spatial changes
in various historic periods, and of the views on their concept and solution. The students also gain knowledge of the centre's prospective role in the urban organism, and of its proposed functional and spatial arrangement, and the prospective extent and organisation of the pedestrian zone.

Prerequisites

Indispensable is the knowledge of the history of architecture, urban design and land planning. Important is a general overview (philosophy, history, politics, social spects).

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The examination is conditioned by submission of the seminar work in required qulity and in due time, after having passed the oral part of the examination.

Aims

The subject's objective is to orientate the students in the problems of urban centres and their significance in the urban organism. On the development of functional and spatial changes of the urban centres are analysed the possibilities and the prospective role of urban centres in the urban organism, including proposals of changes of their functional and spatial arrangement (regeneration). Another objective is the study of the prospective extent and organisation of the pedestrian zone of the urban centre, and the distribution of historic attractivities, and urban social and production activities.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Concept of the seminar work - final paper. Obligatory is 80% attendance at the seminar, 20 % missed seminars need not to be made up for.
