The course is based on a reflection of Czech art of the 1960s - 1980s both through personal experience and a view from the distance.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After attending the course, students should be able to comparatively reflect the events of 1960s - 80s in relation with inner cultural politics and the situation abroad. They should be able to critically assess the background and quality scale of art production of the aforementioned decades.

Prerequisites

Students have to have basic knowledge of international and Czech art history.

Aims

The course will show the schizophrenia of the communist period manifested in art through the coexistence of cultural establishment on the one hand and outside influences on the other. The course teacher will present a personally modified vision of the three decades or art in Czechoslovakia in contrast with view from the outside (Western Europe). The aim of the course is to adumbrate the paralell existence of antagonist cultures: the official cultural production, the alternative scene, and the underground. All three modes of artistic production will be put int owider context.

Attendance at the lectures is voluntary, attendance at the seminars is mandatory.
