Laboratory Classes in Ecotoxicology

Ecotoxicity - methods of determination. Ecotoxicity of waste, classes of leaching, LC (EC, IC) 50, testing scheme; limit, preliminary, basic, introductory, control test; the use of animals for ecotoxicological tests. Evaluation of toxicity of substances and wastes for various organisms including the terrestric ones. Tests of higher plants and fungi - phytotoxicity tests.

Learning how to carry out ecotoxicological biotests and to interpret their results

Skills necessary to work in a chemical laboratory obtained in basic laboratory classes and branch laboratory classes

Elaboration of reports related to block-structured laboratory classes

Course curriculum

1. Significance and use of toxicity tests; definitions and explanation of abbreviations
2. Methods of acute toxicity tests
3. Growth inhibition test with fresh water algae
4. Acute immobilisation test with daphnia and acute test with fish
5. Growth inhibition test with Sinapsis alba root.
6. Recommended procedures for breeding of testing organisms;
7. alternative toxicity tests
7. Bacterial bioluminescence toxicity test
8. Growth inhibition test with lesser duckweed (Lemna minor)
9. Evaluation of direct toxicity of waste waters for lesser duckweed (Lemna minor)

Acquisition of knowledge necessary for the application of ecotoxicological biotests for evaluation of environment contamination

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
