The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at B1 level (pre-intermediate - intermediate).

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at A2 level (elementary). They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding e.g. to the course AM2 or basic exam from English as second foreign language. It is a follow-up to the course AJ1BK, successful completion of which is a necessary prerequisite for the course AJ2BK.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having worked out all assigned tasks in e-learning (with 60% points as minimum). Final evaluation reflects the student’s systematic work and the knowledge tested by the examination. The examination consists of a written and an oral part and corresponds to the B1 level according to the Common European Framework.

Session 1 (5h) - U7, U8: outline of grammar and vocabulary. Introductory tutorial.
Session 2 (5h) - U9, U10: outline of grammar and vocabulary. Checking comprehension.
Session 3 (5h) - U11, U12: outline of grammar and vocabulary. Revision.
Self study

U7: Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple. Trends and graphs. Company benefits. Opinions and suggestions. Agreeing and disagreeing.
U8: Crossing cultures. Modal verbs. Descriptions. Invitations.
U9: History of a company. Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous. Growing economy. Offers and requests.
U10: Environment. Global problems. Future: will + infinitive; 1st Conditional, if and when. Describing a place. Prepositions of place. Asking for information.
U11: Getting around in cities. 2nd Conditional. City description. Social responses.
U12: The story of a product. Descriptions. Passive. Thanking for hospitality. Saying goodbye.

Aims

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Students learn basic grammar and lexical structures at B1 level (pre-intermediate - intermediate) necessary for everyday communication.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students’ attendance and their work are systematically controlled. Most of the study is organized as self-study.
