English for Beginners 2

The course is intended to teach English as the second foreign language at general level. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace and simple grammar for everyday communication.

Prerequisites

Course is intended false beginners and begineers who attended and successfully completed the course “English for Beginners I” in the previous semester. The course follows up on the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired (i.e. students have to be familiar with pronunciation, basic phrases, verbs to be and to have, plural, present simple, questions, negative).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively and worked out all assigned tasks for self-study. Students have to pass a credit test reaching 60% points as minimum.

1. U1 Introduction. Revision (pronunciation, intonation). Getting to know people.
2. U1 Present Simple (I, you, we, they). Communication.
3. U1 Introductions, greetings, goodbyes.
4. U2 Lifestyles. Present Simple (he, she, it). Adverbs of frequency.
5. U2 Numbers. Telling the time.
6. U2 Time expressions. Telephoning.
7. U3 A great place to work. There is, there are. Some, any.
8. U3 Places in a town. Prepositions.
9. U3 Asking for and giving instructions. Asking for travel information.
10. U4 The road to success. Past Simple. Regular and irregular verbs.
11. U4 Travel and holiday
12. U4 Telephoning. Leaving a message. Spelling.
13. Revision, credit test

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks, such as describing problems, handling simple telephone calls, giving instructions, asking for travel information etc. that arise in a wide range of occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Absence may be in justified cases compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.
