The course is intended to teach English as the second foreign language at general level. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace and grammar as needed for everyday communication.

Prerequisites

The course follows up on the vocabulary and grammar from "Angličtina pro mírně pokročilé I" and requires previous knowledge of the following:
Grammar: To be, have, have got. Present Simple. There is, there are. Adverbs of frequency. Some, any. Prepositions. Past Simple. Regular and irregular verbs. Mass and Count nouns. Some, a lot, many, much. Comparative and superlative adjectives. Present continuous. Future: will. Expressing probability.
Vocabulary: Getting to know people. Numbers. Telephoning. Lifestyles. Job. Time expressions. Travel and holiday. Instructions. Food. Offers and requests. Eating and drinking. Telling the time, dates. Welcoming a visitor. Work. Making and changing arrangements. Communication and languages. Faxes and emails.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively and worked out all assigned tasks for self-study. Students have to pass a credit test reaching 60% points as minimum. Exam has a written and an oral part and is required for completing bachelor´s study for students whose first foreign language is German. It corresponds to A2 level according to the Common European framework for languages.

7. U10 Developing a company. Past Simple and Present Perfect.
8. U10 Verbs with prepositions.
9. U10 Answerphone messages. Emails and mobile phones.
10. Revision, credit test

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students with knowledge and skills that are necessary for real-life tasks, such as booking a room in a hotel, handle correspondence, agreeing and desagreeing, describing people, places and things, negotiate with customers etc. that arise in a wide range of occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Absence may be in justified cases compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.
