Course detail

Introduction to Material Science and Engineering

FP-BumvPAcad. year: 2011/2012

The course acquaints the students with the basic knowledge about internal structure of technical materials, their phase composition and relates the material's chemical composition together with their structure and application properties. At the same time, it introduces some basic technologies used for processing the technical materials in engineering practice.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will gain knowledge about the basis of physico-chemical processes which are crucially involved in determination of the application properties of the materials and their processing technologies. This knowledge is necessary in order to obtain an image about the use of materials in engineering practice.

Prerequisites

Fundamental knowledge of secondary-school physics and chemistry.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions of obtaining a credit: Basic condition for gaining a credit is active presence in all lessons and elaboration of protocols summarizing each lesson based on the guidelines given by the teacher. The examination consists of written and oral part. In written part of the exam, the student writes an essay on given topic selected from the whole syllabus of the subject. In oral part of the exam, the student answers the questions related to the exam's written part and few other additional questions of the examiner.

Aims

Goal of this subject is to make students mastering the basic knowledge about technical materials and to gain relations among their chemical composition, internal structure and application properties. The content of the subject gives to the students a review of technologies employed in processing the materials applied in industrial practice.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Missed lessons may be compensated for based on the agreement with particular teacher.
