Business Logistics

The course provides students with basic project knowledge of material and information flow and their optimization. It deals with development trends in logistics as global discipline and presents information needed for solving different complicated and global issues such as purchase, supply, product and run problems, which are required for effective business management. The course offers instruments for solving material flows problems within the logistic chains. Knowledge of logistics disciplines will be necessary to adopt in all trade firms, which work in retailing, export and import, but by manufacturing organizations and organizations which provide services too.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to create and project logistic concepts in industrial organizations. They will be able to project logistic chains and networks using information and communication technologies. They will learn how to manage a logistics department, accomplish the mission of logistics procurement, i.e. purchasing, storage, packing technology, marking of products and etc. Students will learn how to form and evaluate controlling activities in logistic processes, determine the economy of logistic processes, activities and outputs. Students will be able to project the technology of logistic processes and propose a technique for these processes.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have the following knowledge and skills when they begin the course: mathematics disciplines, statistics, theory of decisions and basic economics disciplines, i.e. microeconomics. At the same time they have to be familiar with corporate economics, basic profitability, effectiveness of investments, and corporate bookkeeping.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course unit-credit is awarded on condition of having attended all compulsory seminars in a computer lab, as well as numerical exercises. Course-unit credit is conditional also on attendance at excursions and on elaboration of a case study including presentation of results. Absence from seminars can be compensated for by attending special make-up seminars after the end of the semester. The exam has a written and an oral part. The written part of the examination contains examples and theory. The oral part tests student’s ability to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice.

Aims

The course is a part of theoretical and creative basis focused on trade. Within the economic globalisation, the main role of logistics is the material flow management aimed, with the use of information technologies, to ensure an optimum performance and added value. From this point of view these functions represent basic mission of logistics, i.e. logistics-oriented organization. Therefore students should be familiar with it when dealing with the given problems.Another goal of the course is a projection of logistic concepts in an industrial organisation and a project of logistic chains (networks), as well as incorporation of an industrial organisation in a supply chain using IT/ICT.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance is required and checked by the tutor in written form of an attendance list. Also controlled is a partial solution of the case study in the middle of the semester.Absence from seminars can be compensated for by attending special make-up seminars the terms of which are announced by teachers at the end of the semester.
