Students taking the subject Foreign Language - English to Pre-Intermediate Level will have the opportunity to learn and practice the basic vocabulary and basic grammar rules of general English. They will also practice primarily speaking and listening skills.

In the winter semester of the first year, the student must take the placement test for all students witch will be available on the SPV webside at http://www.fce.vutbr.cz/SPV/. Then, in the summer semester of the first year they will join a group (after e-mailing the teacher to request registration) according to their reult in this test. Enrolment in one of the four leels of classes is compulsory for the summer semester, but if the student's level of English is much higher than BYA4, they may reach an agreement with their teacher that they will nor attend the lesons and will simply take the BY01 exam during the summer examination period.

Form of the examination and the final classification of the subject:

The exam consists of two parts: 1) a written part which tests the student’s knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as reading, writing and listening skills; and 2) an oral part which tests the student’s ability to speak simply on certain topics and respond to questions.
The English Department of the Institute of Social Sciences uses an internal scale for the classification of exam results which is adapted to the types of test available for the testing of language knowledge.

- There are no lectures for this subject.

- The lessons will consist of grammar presentations/revision and exercises, listening practice and most importantly, speaking activities to practice grammar, activate vocabulary and build fluency. The emphasis is on developing the general ability of students to communicate effectively using the language they have.

The subject Foreign Language - English to Pre-Intermediate Level aims to bring students’ knowledge of English up to pre-intermediate level, which is a level just under the CEF B1 level.

Students are expected to actively participate in practical lessons, and do homework throughout the course. This is particularly important for students who are studying in the subjects BYA1, 2 and 3 because their English is not yet close to the required level to pass the BY01 exam.
The homework will be set and monitored within the MOODLE e-learning system, the contents of which are continuously updated and supplemented.
Tuition of the subject Foreign Language - English to Pre-Intermediate Level takes place in accordance with the Directive of the Rector No. 34/2005 and the instruction of the Dean No. 13/2006 on the tuition of languages.
