Industrial automation

Overview in means of automation, process instrumentation, industrial controllers, counters, timers. Programmable logic controllers, noisy immunity. Modular PLCs and modules spectrum. Software and programming languages of PLCs.Industrial PC for control and an introduction in real-time control. Distributed control systems. Introduction and principles of industrial communication buses (Profibus, Fieldbus, CAN, DeviceNet, Interbus S, P-net and FIP, LonWorks].

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be equipped by an overview on distributed systems of industrial automation (DCS) and means for supervisory control as operator modules and stations. They will be oriented in the wide scale of means of automation from sensors, industrial controllers and other types of controllers and actor members. They will have a good overview in industrial communication buses and programmable controllers.

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Aims

The aim of the subject is in overview of the all spectrum of means of automation from process instrumentation beginning from sensors, action members, counters, timers and control members ( electronic industrial controllers, programmable logic controllers, PLC and embedded microcontrollers following by means for visualization, supervisory control and communication systems for industrial use).

Action members, DC and AC drives.
Counters, timers, industrial controllers.
Programmable logic controllers, basic properties, overview on PLCs, function. Software and programming languages of PLC. Hardware architecture of PLCs.
Programming of PLC. IEC 1131-3 Standard and examples.
Distributed control systems. Architecture of DCS, HW of the first control level, operator level, interface to supervisory systems.
Introduction into LANs. Model ISO/OSI. Physical layer.
Link layer. Synchronization, modulation, coding of signal.
Higher layer of the model, function and services. Industrial communication busses. Model of serial industrial bus.
Overview on industrial busses. Case solutions. Sensor bus.
Examples of byte communication systems. Protocol CAN and DeviceNet.
Foundation Fieldbus.
Control by PC (Soft control).
