Radio Receivers and Transmitters.

This course is focussed on the architecture, main building blocks description and significant parameters definition of the analogue and digital radio communication systems. First part of this course is devoted to the description of the electronic circuitry used in radio systems e.g. mixers, oscillators, frequency synthesizers, analogue and digital signals modulators/demodulators, AVC and AFC circuits, RF power amplifiers, drivers, power combiners etc. Second part presents selected analogue radio systems e.g. FM stereo broadcasting or RDS. Third part deals with methods of digital signal processing used in the software radio receivers and transmitters. Last part comprises description of the T-DAB system.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students become familiar with the architecture, main building blocks function and significant parameters definition of the radio communication systems, with the principles of function of the electronic circuitry used in analog and digital radio communication systems and with description of the selected radio systems and techniques such as FM stereo broadcasting, radio data system, digital audio broadcasting etc.

Course curriculum

1. Frequency bands. Basic radio receiver and transmitter architectures.
2. Radio receiver and transmitter parameters and measuring methods. Input circuits of radio receivers.
3. Mixers (additive, multiplicative, balanced). Oscillators (LC, crystal).
4. Frequency synthesizers, PLL, DDFS. Band-pass amplifiers. IF filters.
5. AM, FM and PM demodulators. MQAM and MPSK demodulators.
6. Auxiliary circuits, AGC, AFC. Stereo broadcasting, encoders and decoders. RDS.
7. Selective band-pass amplifier. Active RF power components. Amplifier classes and modes.
8. Matching, transformation and coupling circuits. Broadband power amplifiers.
9. AM, FM and PM modulators. MQAM and MPSK modulators. DDFS based modulators.
10. High efficiency RF power amplifiers, classes D, E and F.
11. Sampling of band-pass signals, A/D converters for radio receivers.
12. Digital signal processing techniques in wireless technology (filtering, demodulation, synchronization).
13. Software transceiver. Implementation techniques. OFDM, digital radio broadcasting DAB-T.

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the architecture, main building blocks function and significant parameters definition of the analogue and digital radio communication systems, with the principles of function of the electronic circuitry used in analogue and digital radio systems and with description of the selected radio systems and techniques such as FM stereo broadcasting, radio data system, digital audio broadcasting etc.

Additive and multiplicative mixers. Mixers with spurious product reduction. Feedback LC and crystal oscillators. Voltage-controlled oscillators.
Frequency synthesis. Phase-locked loop. DDFS. IF amplifiers.
AM, FM and PM demodulators. MPSK, MQAM, FSK, GMSK demodulators. Carrier recovery and symbol timing recovery circuits.
Auxiliary receiver circuits. AVC and AFC circuits.
Analog and digital transmitters architecture. Significant parameters. Power amplifiers. A, B and C classes. High-efficiency power amplifiers, operating classes D, E and F. Power amlifier linearisation techniques.
AM, FM and PM modulators. MPSK, MQAM, FSK, GMSK modulators. Auxiliary transmitter circuits. Drivers. Power combiner.
Stereo broadcasting. Stereo coders and decoders. Radio Data System (RDS).
Digital signal processing used in the radio receivers and transmitters. Frequency downconversion, interpolation, decimation, frequency filtering, matched filtering, bandpass sampling, etc. Software radio.
Digital audio broadcasting T-DAB.
