Device Safety

The course is an introduction to the issue of safe operation of electrical medical devices. Students will gain knowledge of the principles, legal provisions, safety regulations and technical standards in the field of safety in electrical engineering. Particular emphasis is placed on the specifics of medical equipment and the potential electrical and other risks, which may occur during their operation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Qualification for independent work on electrical medical equipment in terms of safe work and safe operation. Basic knowledge of protection against electric shock, protection against overcurrent and short circuit, protecting against surges and the effects of fire from electrical equipment. Knowledge of electrical and other possible risks associated with the operation of medical devices. Knowledge of first aid in case of electric shock.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Requirements for completion of a course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every year.

Course curriculum

Czech and European legislative, technical standards. Effects of electric current on human organism. Risk of injury caused by radiofrequency, non-ionizing and ionizing radiation. Electric arrangement, electrical installation, electrical device mounting, conductor and terminals notation. Classification of external influence, locations class in viewpoint of electric shock hazard, protection of electrical device. Protection against electric shock. Medical electric devices, special requirements. Fire safety of electrical installation and medical electrical devices. Protection of electric and electronic devices against lightning and overvoltage. Laic first aid in case of electric shock.

Aims

To learn the principles of safe design and safe operation of electrical medical equipment as part of professional erudition. Indicate the specific requirements of medical installation and equipment, to highlight the potential risks in the operation of diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices.
