Analog Filter Design

The basic principles of the filters and its division. General theory of the signal filtration, filter parameters and its derivation. Passive RLC filters of the first, second and higher orders, different types and approximations. Computer aided design of the electrical filters, program PSPICE, SNAP, NAF and FILTER SOLUTION. Sensitivity and tolerance analysis of the filters. Frequency and impedance normalization and transformation. Active RC feedback filters with single, two and three operational amplifiers and other functional blocks. The filter with transmission zeroes. The filters with synthetic elements (superinductor, frequency dependent negative resistor). Allpass two-ports, equalizers, signal couplers and splitters. Current-mode filters. The filters with switched capacitors, special program for its design. Electromachanical and piezoelectrical filters. Filters with surface wave. Electronical tunning and control of active filter parameters. Filter optimization based on the different criterions.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students become familiar with the design methods of the analogue electrical filters, to improve the knowledge from the circuit theory and its suitable application, furthermore to improve the ability in computer aided design by PSpice and other software.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

2. Fundamental notions from the field of electronic filters.
3. Passive RC filters, properties.
4. Passive RLC filters, properties.
5. Active devices and functional blocks used in filters.
6. Active RC filters with different orders.
7. Multifunctional filters.
8. Filters with synthetic elements.
9. All-pass phase-shift filters, frequency correctors.
10. Switched capacitors based filters.
11. Filters working on distinct physical principles.
12. Available software for analog filter design.

Aims

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with several types of the modern analogue filters, to teach them how to design passive and active filters of the high order, to make them familiar with computer aided optimal design, adequate simulation and verifying analysis, putting an emphasis on individual projects.

Principal, object, types, characteristics and parameters of the EF.
Biquadratic RLC filters. Passive filters RC.
High-order RLC filters and design tools of them.
Active elements and functional blocks in filters, modeling of them.
Single-amplifier biquads (LP, BP, HP).
Multiple-amplifier biquads.
Elliptic ARC biquads and band-reject ARC filters.
Design of the high-order ARC filters, cascade synthesis.
ARC filters with functional blocks and synthetic elements.
All-pass filters and correctors.
Switched-capacitor and CCD filters. Current-mode filters.
Electro-mechanic, piezoelectric and PAW filters.
Optimization of designed filters. Tuning and controlling of parameters.
