Measurement and Experiment

FSI-ZEMAcad. year: 2011/2012

The course "Electronics and Measurement" familiarises students with procedures and principles of technical experiment in work of a mechanical engineer. It defines the basics of the modern methods applied for measuring of mechanical quantities, and explains the structure of the measuring and control chain. The course deals with the analysis of the analog and digital signals in time and frequency domain too. A part of the course is also devoted to the measurement of kinematic quantities, forces, torques, pressure and noise. The course is divided into the following blocks: acoustic measurements in engineering, basics of experimental modal analysis, monitoring of a technical machine condition and service life tests of mechanical units.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will have an overview of contemporary possibilities of experimental detection of some mechanical quantities needed for an assessment of failure-free operation of machines and their parts. They will be provided with fundamental practical knowledge of and experience with these problems. They will be able to formulate real requests for these activities and will have a grasp of evaluation and interpretation of the results.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics, numerical mathematics, statistics and probability, physics, mechanics and electrical engineering.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. The course has intensive block instruction form scheduled in the first four weeks of the semester.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on the following conditions: active participation in the seminars, good results of elaborated laboratory exercises, solution of additional tasks in case of longer excusable absence.
Examination: in 5. week the student must pass the final test to complete the course. In the test the student has to prove knowledge of basic terms, important principles and their application.

Aims

Students will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of and experience with contemporary methods, experimental instrumentation and computer technology intended for detection of input data, for computational simulation of machines and machine parts, as well as for verification of results. Also dealt with are kinematic quantities, forces, moments, pressures and noise and processing of acquired results with using of CAT/CAME systems.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at practicals is required. One absence can be compensated for by attending a seminar with another study group in the same week, or by elaboration of substitute tasks. Longer absence may be compensated for by special tasks according to instructions of the tutor.
