History of Visual Art I

In this course the origins of the history of art and design are dealt with: Introduction to various types of visual art and design and their characteristics, arts and crafts, periodization, style characteristics of style, basic concepts (realist, naturalistic, expressive, abstract, composition, idealization, linear, geometrical, organic), primeval art (Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Megalithic buildings, function, sculpture, painting, crafts), Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, Mycenae, ancient Greece, art of Etruscs and Romans. Old Christian and Byzantine art, art of early Middle Ages (pre Caroline, Caroline), Roman and Gothic style art (architecture, sculpture, painting, arts and crafts in European countries and in this country).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic orientation in history of art, applied art and arts and crafts in classic periods of the Ancient World and Middle Ages.

Prerequisites

Basic high school level orientation in the development of visual arts, arts and crafts, and design.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam verifies global orientation and knowledge of the development in visual art of given period and relationship to the previous development and to the present. The exam consists of: written test and verbal part. According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.
