Computer Modelling - Rhinoceros 3D

The course is concerned with basic knowledge of work with 3D graphic software. Introducing Nurbs modelling approaches. Practical use of Rhinoceros 3D software (making complex curves and surfaces from curves, making volumes form surfaces, working with layers, joining parts into a complex objects, basics of photorealistic visualization in V-Ray rendering plug-in module and basics of file format conversion in order to use in different modelling software.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course enables students to acquire practical proficiency in work with 3D graphics using the program environment of Rhinoceros3D. Students will acquire knowledge about ways of implementation complex 3D projects (making complex curves and surfaces from curves, making volumes form surfaces, working with layers, joining parts into a complex objects). Students learn to use all program features for its implementation into their own ideas and designs in given semester projects. Students will also experience the fact that every graphic software is only a tool for creative process, making it more effective and faster but it can not replace creative thinking of a designer, which needs a sensitive approach for solving a project.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of work with PC in Windows XP OS is assumed. Experience with computer 3D graphics is an advantage.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance in lessons, meeting assigned projects deadlines, practical test verifying the knowledge of work with the software and creative work ability.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects, tasks and a test. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The course objective is to make students familiar with possibilities and features of 3D software for making various 3D models and its visualization, to learn and use software Rhinoceros3D. Students will gain experience in making virtual 3D models based on sketches from their atelier semester projects. Students work out their semester projects at different stages with full support of computer technologies.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in education is controlled. Students have to stay in given education hours in the computer laboratory, wait for consultation and work on the projects. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence may jeopardise awarding a graded course-unit credit.

1. Introduce to 3D modeling softwares and Rhinoceros 3D – user interface, basic options of Rhinoceros 3D
2. Rhinoceros – coordinate system, coordinate input, object properties, layers, basics objects, object visibility, construction history
3. Rhinoceros 3D – creating and editing of objects made by curves, edit tools
4. Rhinoceros 3D – creating of surfaces, boolean operations with objects, principles of work with objects
