Experimental Biophotonics

Basics of cell biology in vitro: structure and functions of the cell; isolation into and maintenance of cells from multicellular organism into in vitro systems; mastering the specialty of preparation of live cells for microscopical observations. Protocols of in vitro investigations of cell behaviour. Interpretation and evaluation of results of microscopical observations of cell behaviour. The role of light microscopy techniques for study of live cells in vitro: principles of light microscopy, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, quantitative phase contrast in holographic microscopy, image processing and analysis.

Acquaintance with the basics of live cell biology in vitro; preparation and cultivation of cell for microscopy observation; application of light microscopies to study cell living in vitro; elements of interpretation of results of biological experiments from physical and biological points of view.
Understanding problems and gaining insight into current trends of biological microscopy.
Acquiring of widened ability to interdisciplinary professional activity.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of elements of geometric optics.

Student assesment will take into consideration his/her work at laboratory and wiil depend on the result of final discussion on specified themes. Notes and literature is permitted.

Aims

Objective of the theme is the introduction into the basics and prospective of live cell biology in vitro as observed and studied with techniques of light microscopy.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Presence in all teaching units is required because of their mutual links. In the case of student absention, tacher will specify alternative requirements.
