Safety engineering is a progressive and fast growing field closely related to process engineering and environmental engineering. Fundamental issues involve danger identification (risk sources) and determination of degree of a risk (guess of frequency of event occurrence). Subject focuses on large scale industrial accidents, relevant EU and CR legislation and overview of possible consequences of hazardous chemical substance leakage. Second part of the course is devoted to overview of methods used in practice to identify risk sources of serious accidents (screening, index and selective methods). This is followed by detailed analysis of risk source of serious accidents using FMEA and HAZOP methods, consequences modeling and determination of risk admissibility for a community. The whole concept of the seminar is based on approach to process and equipment safety developed by Centre for Chemical Process Safety under AIChE.
