Bank Products And Services

The course concentrates on the principles and technologies of products and services offered to bank clients in retail banking. The viewpoint of a client as the product user is emphasized. If needed, legislation- and regulation-related conditions are presented defining the parameters of the products and services offered by banks. After completing the course, the students are oriented towards bank offers and their use. They are also prepared for understanding the follow-up course, „Banking II“ – banking business“
The course is also suitable for students of the management informatics field.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

To get an understanding of the way the banking sector works, the banking products can be used in practice, the payment instruments and banking services are used, and how risks can be eliminated. Honouring the “time value of money“ principle when choosing the right banking product, writing a loan request for a particular company.

Prerequisites

Basics of financial markets, theory of money, expansive and restrictive monetary policy in an open economy, aspects of the EU currency policy, basic functions of commercial banks and the essentials of their business activities.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The credit will be granted if a business plan is submitted – loan request. The exam takes the form of a written test and an interview.

2. Banking products. Structure of banking products by the balance and by the function.
3. Deposit products of commercial banks.
4. Long-term savings accounts. (alternative saving)
5. Transactions related to bills of exchange and cheques.
6. Loan products of commercial banks.
7. Mortgage and building savings account loans.
8. Basic forms of documentary payments.
9. Payment transaction as a banking product.
10. Domestic and foreign bank transfers.
11. Alternative distribution channels.
12. Foreign exchange transaction products.
13. Banking financial credit trading.

Aims

To acquaint the students with the basic principles of the banking sector, to explain the rules for a bank’s active, passive, and neutral client transactions, payment principles, payment instrument use, and provision of banking services. To present the general principles of lending to individuals and corporations and eliminating the risks of such transactions. To provide the students with basic understanding of a banking product portfolio preparing them for the choice of products suitable for dealing with different financial situations.
Students should be capable of analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of client services and understanding the parameters and conditions of their provision.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

This is entirely at the teacher’s discretion. Active participation in workshops, the knowledge acquired is being tested on a continual basis.

Syllabus

1. The structure of the Czech Republic banking system.
Position and role of the central bank, current problems of the Czech banking. Banking act, insurance of deposits. Protection against the legalization of criminal proceeds.
2. Banking products. Structure of banking products by the balance and by the function. Traditional and modern banking products. Transition to electronic banking products and services.
3. Deposit products of commercial banks. Quantitative and qualitative structure of passive operations. Specificity of client deposits. An overview of banking products for client deposits. Differentiation of client deposit interests and commercial reasons for setting their variants.
4. Long-term savings accounts. (alternative saving)
Building savings accounts, characteristics, loan variants and the effects of valorising the money deposited. Pension fund products, characteristics, valorisation, reasons for use.
5. Transactions related to bills of exchange and cheques. Types and requisites of bills and checks, creation, transfer and cessation of rights and obligations related to bills of exchange. Description of cheque and bill of exchange related transactions. Practical use of cheques and bills of exchange.
6. Loan products of commercial banks. Quantitative and qualitative structure of active transactions. Contractual documents. Dominant position of client loans. Business loans, consumer loans, mortgages. Mechanisms of granting, drawing on, and repaying of client loans. Forms of securing the loans granted, minimizing the risks.
7. Mortgage and building savings account loans. The purpose, principles and types, methods of their granting and management. Capital life insurance and its effect in combination with loan products.
8. Basic forms of documentary payments. The operative mechanism of a documentary payment. Documentary collection and documentary letters of credit. Specific features of documentary letters of credit.
9. Payment transaction as a banking product.
Basic forms of smooth payments. Cash transactions and the related legislation in the Czech Republic. The Czech National Bank (ČNB) and cash, protective measures, cash management.
10. Domestic and foreign bank transfers, the principle of internal and interbank clearing transactions and settlement, function of the ČNB clearing centre. Operative mechanism of smooth payments. Cross-border bank transfer in EU.
11. Alternative distribution channels. Self-service and technical sale. Electronic banking – principles and use of electronic payment instruments.
12. Foreign exchange transaction products.
Prompt and forward transactions and their use in corporate practice.
Structure of forward transactions (spot, forward). Swap transactions.
13. Banking financial credit trading. Factoring, forfeiting, leasing. Schema and description, participants in the trade, comparison of individual products, advantages, disadvantages, reasons for use.
