Sociology for visual artists: culture, art, society

The course introduces sociological interpretation of practices, institutions, and discourses creating intersubjectivesly shared meanings in the modern conditions. It delineates the basic concepts and theoretical perspectives of the sociology of culture and art. The first part of the course focuses on the problematics of the determination of cultural analysis through the optics of sociology. The second part of the course focuses on the questions of the sociology of art and visuality. The third part is devoted to the discussion and presentation of students' projects which will attempt at introducing and using the conceptual tools of cultural sociology and analysis.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Exam in the form of essay based on assigned reading. A minimum of 60 out of 100 points is needed to obtain te credit.

Theory and personae - cultural analysis.
1. What is culture? Anthropologists and culture. The function of culture. Culture and industrial society. Culture as a lifestyle. Mass society and culture. Culture and modernity.
2. Theoretical and methodological issues of culture study. Ideology and culture. Cultural hegemony, Cultural studies. Ethnography of culture. Culture, language, and the symbolic order (Geertz). Culture as a discourse (Fouclcault]
3. "Highbrow" culture, art, and aesthetics. The production of "highbrow" culture. Aesthetics and culture. "Art" and genres.
4. Culture and imperialism. The sociology of culture.
5. race, ethnicity, culture.
6. Class and culture. Bourdie, habitus, and the cultural capital - new forms of class differenciation.
7. Gendered cultures. Women and cultural marginalization. The representation of gender in culture. Judith Butler and the politics of post-feminist cultural studies.
8. Media and the creation of popular culture.
9. Sociology of art. Artworks as sociological utterances. The artist as a social actor and researcher.
10. Visual sociology. The visuality of the world and visual imagination. Socially-oriented pthotography. Workshops.
