Course detail

Machine Design - Mechanisms

FSI-6KM-KAcad. year: 2011/2012

The course is focused on mechanisms used in machines and equipments. Especially mechanical, hydraulical, pneumatic mechanisms are solved and and also their combinations and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are discussed.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will be familiarized with mechanisms used in machines and equipments, especially with their function and application.

Prerequisites

Students are required to have the knowledge obtained from previous courses: Machine Design - machine parts, Machine Design - gears, Fundamentals of Design, Material science and of Mechanics of solids. Also the knowledge of statics, kinematics, strenghth of materials, and material science.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The graded course-unit credit terms:
-activity in tutorials.
-written solution of semestral project
-presentation of the project via discussion with tutor. Maximal number of points is 60, minimal number of points necessary for course-unit credit is 30.
-test carried out on electronic testing system. Test with possibility of answers selection is based on lectures topics (maximal number of points obtained from test is 40. Minimal number of points for passing the test is 20).
Total number of points is sum of points obtained from semestral project and points obtained from test. Minimal number of points is 50 and maximal number of points is 100.

Aims

The aim of the course is to inform the students about numerous types of mechanisms used in machines. The course extends the knowledge from the course Machine Design - Mechanical Drives and it is focused on the structural analysis and synthesis in order to design equipments for movement transformation and force transmission.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in lectures is recommended, participation at seminars is checked and recorded - two absences are allowed. Lectures are available in Moodle system. The project "Analysis of kinematics and dynamics of four-stroke engine" is solved in Mathcad software.
