The management and mediation of art

Students will learn about the theoretical issues of contemporary art management, the current art affairs, the issues of art market, and the issues of mediating art as the part of the artist's position. In their individual research, students will focus on the management issues of a chosen art or cultural institution.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will elaborate an analysis of the management of a chosen art institution, they will have a basic orientation in the questions of art management.

Prerequisites

Essential knowlege of the history of art from the B.A. cycle.

Seminar, guided discussion. Some seminars take place in the art intitutions.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit. The credit is granted upon presenting a paper during the semester and writing a final test (min. 60%].

Course curriculum

Topics>
art management: the art world, interpretation, presentation and mediation of art, art museums and galleries, the role of state and private galleries, the position and roles of a curator, the production of an exhibition from the position of an artist, art in the reflection of the media, the role of international exhibitions, prizes and awards, the role of artistic groups in contemporary art.

Aims

Students will have a good orientation in the current art world, they will know the basic problematics of museums and galleries, they will know about the professional positions of the artist, curator, theoretician, the gallery animator, and other professions in the field of the mediation of art.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendence at lectures is optional, attedence at seminars is mandatory. Absences may be made up for by a long oral paper and an essay.
