Restoration of Monuments in Practice

The subject covers the structural substance of historic buildings, i.e. the structural and bearing principles of the individual parts of buildings, materials, reconstruction. Attention is focused primarily on historical structures and materials that are not currently used in contemporary building. The aim is to impart to the students the knowledge needed for decision-making on intervention into and renovation of historic buildings.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The knowledge gained by completing the study of the subject will qualify the student to decide on the concept for any intervention in a historic building, in particular a listed building.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of the subject's study requires knowledge of the history of architecture, in particular the morphology of styles, typology of characteristic buildings, typical structures, their tectonics and building materials. Further is expected the student's orientatation in problems of monument care and protection, adequate knowledge of principles, methods, legislation, technologies and materials to be used in reconstruction of monuments.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Attendance of lectures, working out of a graphic assignment.
Classified credit is conditioned by on a written test and submission of a graphic work.

Aims

The subject's objective is to provide knowlegde needed for decision-making on concepts for intervention in monuments, in the framework of renewal of historic buildings.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Lectures using audio-visual equipment, tutorials with a graphic output (plans, sections, views), excursionst to relevant buildings. Missed lessons are made up for in form od extended
tutorial assignment, or a written bibliographic search relating to the subjects of selected lectures.
