Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic knowledge of Computer Science in the following topics:
Principles of Computer hardware
Architecture of operating systems
Principles of computer networks
Basics of database technology
Principles of computer graphics
Basics of desktop publishing and computer typography
Working knowledge of using spreadsheets in engineering calculation

Course curriculum

1. CPU and operating memory, data reprezentation, instruction set
2. Program and subroutines, stack, CPU registers, I/O system, IRQ, DMA, I/O ports, I/O bus (ISA, PCI, AGP)
3. Basic input/output periferal devices: keyboard, monitor, disk memory
4. Standard PC interfaces: parallel and serial ports, USB
5. Operations principles of standard periferals
6. Operating systems: meaning and classification. Windows and Unix OS, file system structure in various types of OS, booting of OS.
7. User interface in Windows and Unix
8-9. Basics of Data Mangement. Data models, relational model, DB system architecture.
10. Primary and foreign keys, data integrity and consistency, bussines rules and constraints, query languages.
11-12. Computer Graphics, vector and raster formats, palettes, color spaces, graphic primitives, main technologies: rendering, shading, ray-tracing.
13. Basics of computer typography, typeface and its classification, typographical units, type setting and typographic composition, text and format processors, markup format languages.
Training: engineering data manipulation in spreadsheet - design of tables, formulas, charts, database applications, optimization

Basics theoretical knowledges of computer science necessary for the whole study of civil engineering. Mastering of spreadsheets for engineering calculus.
