Small hydro power plants (SHPP) – definition, terminology, division, legislative conditions required for realisation and innovation of SHPP, types of plants considering its placement (structure and technology).
Newly built SHPP, reconstruction of existing SHPP.
Turbines for SHPP – types, products information.
Economic conditions for the SHPP construction and operation, capital cost repayment period.
Study, conceptual solution of SHPP constructional components. Hydrotechnical and hydroenergetical calculations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will acquire the overview of energy balance in CZ and in applicability of primar hydro energy potential. Elementary solution of small hydro power plant and suitable types of water turbine is the aim of the course.

Prerequisites

Hydraulics, weirs, dams, concrete structures, hydro power enrgy utilisation.

Course curriculum

1.week: Energy sources. Stream water power - potential resource. Theoretical, technically applicable hydropower potential of the stream.
2.week: Natural, artificial, primary and secundary sources of waterpower. Basic types of hydropower structures and their components. Structure of energy plants in CZ. Development of energetics in CZ.
3. week: Hydro power plants division. HP cascades. Eficiency of of water source.
4.week: Work and function of water power plant in eletric network - loading diagram.
5. week: Hydro-energetic solution of of run-off the river hydro power plant
6.week: Classification and typed of water turbines. Kaplan, Francise and Pelton turbines.
7.week: Spiral casing of water turbines. Suction pipe. Sucktion head. Cavitation.
8.week: Intake structures of pressureless and pressure hydropower strucutres. Rules of design and types of intake structures. Solution of foreground of intakes, scumboards. Influent conduit of hydro power plants.
9. week: Design of profiles of water power canals and pressure pipes. Safety and operational gates.
10.week: Direct and indirect hydraulic shock. Compensating chambers, their function and types.
11.week: Constructional part of HPP. Buildings of HPP - types of engine room according ot construction and placement. Complete spatial solution. Substructure of engine room – function, basic types of engine set supporting systems. Upper part of the engine room – function, construction types.
12.week: Weir and dam HPP.
13.week: Pilot operation and inspection of hydropower structures.
