The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. It follows up on the basic language knowledge and skills obtained at the previous stages of study.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at B1 level (pre-intermediate - intermediate).

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at A2 level (elementary). They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding e.g. to the course AM2 or basic exam from English as second foreign language.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having worked out all assigned tasks in e-learning (with 60% points as minimum). The credit test has one regular term and two resits.

Course curriculum

Session 1 (5h) - U1, U2: outline of grammar and vocabulary. Introductory tutorial.
Session 2 (5h) - U3, U4: outline of grammar and vocabulary. Checking comprehension.
Session 3 (5h) - revision of grammar and vocabulary. Test.
Self study

Units to be studied in winter semester:
U1: An international Project. Tense review. Present Simple and Present Continuous. Action and state verbs. Personal information. Introductions, greetings. Welcoming a visitor.
U2: New companies. Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple. Used to. Subject and object questions. Work file. Company and job profile. Answering the phone. Making and changing appointments.
U3: Word languages. Comparative and superlative adjectives. Relative clauses. Adjectives file. Personal attitudes and qualities. Giving opinions. Agreeing and disagreeing. Participating in a meeting or discussion.
U4: Consumer trends. Present Continuous, Past Simple. Adjectives and adverbs. Food file. Advice and suggestions.

Aims

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Students learn basic grammar and lexical structures at B1 level (pre-intermediate-intermediate) necessary for everyday communication.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students’ attendance and their work are systematically controlled. Most of the study is organized as self-study.
