Competitive Intelligence

The subject is focused on gaining the information about the competition by legal and ethic way. As main goal of this subject students should adopt the theoretical basics and methodic necessary for gaining the knowledge in terms of preparation and own acquiring information about competition. The adoption of analytical process of gained information is the emphasis in this course together with process of gaining the added value – the new awareness about the competition.

Students will get the knowledge about approaches of getting information about competitive firm.

Prerequisites

Process of corporate strategic management, analysis of domain environment of the company, analysis of corporate internal factors.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Conditions for passing an exam: Knowledge of taught topics and their practical application.
Form of examination: Combined – a written test possibly followed by an oral examination.

Aims

The understanding of information systems dilemma necessary for gaining the information about competition and prove students with knowledge of legal competitive information gathering with its further evaluation.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Syllabus

Introduction. The strategic importance of information and intelligence, the definition of CI, CI basic concepts ,CI international organizations, CI as a system application discipline , 1. and 2. degree of CI.
Intelligence analysis information. (Analysis of competing hypotheses, hypothesis generation strategy , the most common errors)
Information CI cycle. Basic cycle CI reportig, five- phase model of intelligence cycle (management, collection, processing, analysis, distribution).
CI Selected methods. Approach of selecting appropriate methods . Structured brainstorming, cross- impact matrix, key assumptions check, identifiers, premortem analysis.
Time analysis , patent analysis , text and content analysis , strategic war games , sensitivity analysis , structured self-criticism , “What if” analysis.
Counter Competitive Intelligence ( CCI). Company Counter Intelligence,company security, information protection and privacy , company business secrets, misinformation.
Counter Intelligence company protection, CCI five phase model of intelligence cycle (management , collection , analysis , action, action ).
Organizational forms External department , internal department , research organizations, mirror organizations , shadow organizations ,competitors monitoring departments in practice of foreign companies, Spefis .
The process of implementation CI in the company. Implementation forms, cooperation with CI department managers, the most common mistakes in implementing CI into a company.
