Polymer Materials

Course is focused to Production, Properties, Processing and Application of Polymeric Materials: Chemical Bonding and Polymer Structure. Polymer Modification: Copolymerization, Postpolymerization Reaction, Functional Polymers. Relationship between Structure and Chemical Properties of Polymers. Relationship between Structure of Polymers and its Electrical and Optical Properties. Solubility of Polymers. Polymer Additives and Reinforcements: Plasticizers, Fillers and Reinorcements, Alloys and Blends, Antioxidants, Thermal and UV Stabilizers, Flame Retardants, Colorants, Blowing agents, Crosslinking Agents, Lubricants, Antistatic Agents, Optical Whittening Agents.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Examination verifies the knowledges to communicate on theme dealed with composition, properties and application of polymeric materials. The student can graduate the oral examination after giving of project.

Course curriculum

1.History of plastics materials, natural plastics and its modifications, development of vinyl polymers, termoplastics and termosets. Nomenclature of plastics.
2.Relationship between structure and chemical properties. Solubility o polymers, chemical ractivity, degradation, crosslinking, agening and weathering, diffusion and permeability, toxicity, flammability.
3.Relationship between structure, electrical and optical properties of plastics. Dielectric constatnt, electric conductive polymers. Optical properties of polymers.
4.Additivation of plstics, Fillers, plasticizers, softening agents, lubricants, stabilization, flame retarders, pigments and dyes, blowing agents, crosslinking agents, UV-degradable additives.
5.Polyethylene, preparation, properties, applications, crosslinked and chlorinated polyethylene.
6.Polypropylene and other aliphatic polyolefins. Copolymers, dienes, rubers.
7.Halogen-vinyl polymers: PVC a PTFE. Other vinylic polymers: PVAc, polyacrylates, styrenic plastics etc.
8.Polyamides a polyimides. Polyacetals and derivatives. Polycarbonates. Polymers with p-phenylene groups.
9.Celulose and its derivatives. Phenoplastics, aminoplastics.
10.Polyesters. Epoxidic resin.
11.Polyurethanes a polyizocyanurates. Polyurethanes rubers, soft and had foams. Furane resins.
12.Silicones and other termal resistent polymers.



13.Funkcionalizované polymery. Struktura, metody přípravy, vlastnosti.

Knowledge of polymeric materials and its application.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Examination of subject is oral by the lectures themes. Knowledges are required right to exam. Paper on task theme need to be prepared and presented during examination.
