Course detail

Laboratory Classes in Hydrobiology

FCH-BCO_HYB_PAcad. year: 2012/2013

The objective of the course is to give students practically oriented information about basic methods of qualitative and quantitative hydrobilogical analysis. The subject consists of following topics: Basics of microscopic techniques and fundamental principles of water sampling. The sampling of activated sludge from waste-water treatment plant and its consequent analysis , introduction to other methods of microorganisms determination in wastewater. Sampling of flowing and stagnant waters and their consequent analysis. Determination of saprobic index. Excursion to laboratories focussed on hydrobiological and microbiological examination of water.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Increased knowledge, skills and competencies of students will be reflected in the following areas:

1. Mastering of the practical implementation of the qualitative and quantitative hydrobiological analysis associated with handling microscopic techniques
2. Familiarization with sampling methods of different types of waters, sediments, benthic macroinvertebrates, phyto-and zooplankton
3. Understanding of saprobic index calculation and its importance for the estimation of surface water pollution.

Students will be able to expand their knowledge and skills to confront it during excursion in hydrobiological and chemical laboratories of VÚVH in Brno.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Final classification will be awarded on the base of the protocols of practical exercises, working out of the presentation on a given subject.

Course curriculum

1. Fundamentals of microscopic technique, the basic principles of water sampling.
2. Summary of basic methods for determination of quantitative and qualitative hydrobiological analysis.
3. The sampling and consequent analysis of samples of stagnat water (microskopic image according to ČSN norm, identification of macrozoobenthos).
4. The sampling and consequent analysis of samples of running water (microskopic image according to ČSN norm, identification of macrozoobenthos).
5. Monitoring of wastewater - analysis of activated sludge, microskopic image according to ČSN norm.
6. Saprobity, calculation of saprobity index.
7. Presentations of selected topics.
8. Excursions accredited laboratories dealing with hydrobiological and microbiological water analysis.

Aims

The aim of this course is gaining of practical knowledge and experience in the processing of native and fixed hydrobiological material, familiarization with the basic methods for determination of organisms important for different types of aquatic habitats. This knowledge supplemented by information obtained in the lectures of Hydrobiology course will enable to better understand the problems associated with water protection technology and a water treatment technologies, whose mastery is essential for the application in practice.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Present on excursions, field practice, elaboration of the protocols, create a slideshow on a given topics.
