Special Toxicology

Definition of dose-response relationship, toxicity, interactions of substances at different levels. Biotransformation of toxic compounds. Toxicological characteristics of elements, inorganic and organic compounds, organometallic compounds, alkaloids, biologically active substances, natural toxins of fungi, algae, plants and animals. Radiotoxicology warfare agents, pesticides. Principles of carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain new knowledge, understanding and knowledge in the following areas

1st Students will be capable of application concepts in the field of special toxicology and other chemical and toxicological fields (environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, etc.).
2nd Students will gain knowledge of mechanisms of toxic effects on organisms, students will know the different types of toxic effects, students will understand the impact factors (external and internal) on the toxicity of substances. Bbiotransformation of compounds will be explained.
3rd Students gain knowledge of toxicity of elements and their compounds, selected organic compounds, organometallic compounds, alkaloids, biologically active substances, toxins of fungi, algae, plants, animals.
4th Students gain knowledge of radiotoxicology, warfare agents, pesticides.
5th Students will understand the carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects of compounds and toxins.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of general toxicology, inorganic, organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, biochemistry.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Test in the form of written test along with the oral exam in the range of lectures and recommended literature.

Course curriculum

1st Defining the subject of special toxicology, terminology, principles.
2nd Toxic effects on the organ level.
3rd Biotransformation of toxic substances in the body (principle, phase, factors affecting biotransformation), biotransformation of selected compounds.
4th Toxicological characteristics of elements, inorganic and organic compounds, organometallic compounds.
5th Toxicological characteristics of alkaloids.
6th Toxicological characteristics of biologically active substances.
7th Toxicological characteristics of fungal and algal toxins, toxicologically important algae, micromycetes and macromycetes, cyanobacteria.
8th Toxicological characteristics of plant toxins, toxicologically important species of plants.
9th Toxicological characteristics of animal toxins, toxicologically important animal species.
10th Radiotoxicology.
11th Toxicology of warfare agents, pesticides.
12th Principles of carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects. Inhibitors, inducers of natural and synthetic mutagens, carcinogens, teratogens.

Aims

The aim is to provide and clarify the toxic effects of substances and mechanisms of toxic effects on organisms, biotransformation of compoundsy, toxic effects of elements and their compounds, selected organic compounds, alkaloids, biologically active substances, toxins of fungi, algae, plants, animals, radiotoxicology, warfare agents, pesticides. The mechanisms of carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects will be explained.

An integral part of teaching and combined form of teaching is a e-learning tutorial course, divided into blocks, within which are available to students learning support including electronic textbooks, presentations, lectures, and other complementary materials.
