Technical Textilesm and Sorbents

The course is divided into four blocks. The first block focuses on the general basics of textile chemistry and technology with a particular focus on the production and development of technical textiles. This section includes introduction to conventional natural and synthetic fibers for the textile industry. Second block of lectures focuses on advanced fibers for specialized applications - high-performance fibers, thermally / chemically resistant, functional fibers. The next section discusses in more detail the selected application areas of technical textiles (sports textiles, fireproof textiles, geotextiles, medical textiles), focusing on their characteristics (special requirements, raw materials, technology, etc.). The last block of lectures focuses on the introduction to the chemistry and technology of sorbents - summarizes the main theoretical background of sorption processes, experimental determination of basic sorption characteristics. Selected group of natural and synthetic sorbents are discussed in details (absorbents, activated carbon, zeolites, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Having completed the course, it is expected that the student will have acquired knowledge allowing him or her not only to pass the exam successfully, but also to have a good understanding of the problems in his or her prospective professional activity on the field of production and development of conventional and modern fibres, fabrics, clothing and sorbents. Student will gain awareness of the current state of knowledge in the field of textile chemistry and technology of modern textile materials developed for various application areas (high-performance and functional fabrics, textiles for medical applications, etc.) and basic theoretical issues and practical contexts of production and application of sorbents. The main emphasis is placed on acquiring the general relationship between the structure of the product at different levels (from the molecular to the macroscopic scale) and its functional characteristics and potential applications. During the course, each students prepare and defend the separate assay focusing on a selected topic from the discussed issues.

Knowledge of selected chapters from organic and physical chemistry.

Course curriculum

Session I: Introduction (week 1 and 2)
Introduction to Textile Chemistry and Technology (history, basic concepts, fibers for the textile industry, textile production)
Introduction to technical textiles (application sectors, high performance and functional fibers for technical textiles)

Session II: High performance fibers (week 3 to 6)
Aramid fibers (spinning, solution properties, applications)
Fibers of high-performance polyethylene (preparation, properties and applications of HPPE fibers)
Other high performance organic fiber (aromatic polyesters, aromatic heterocyclic polymers - PBO, PBI, M5, thermoset fibers)
Chemically resistant organic fibers (fibers of chlorinated and fluorinated polymers, PEEK fibers and PS)
Carbon fibers (history, uniqueness of the graphitic structure, PAN carbon fibers, pitch carbon, carbon nanofibers, properties and applications)
Glass, ceramic and metallic fibers (properties, preparation and applications)

Session III: Functional and performance textiles (week 7 to 9)
Waterproof, breathable fabrics (a tightly woven fabrics, membrane systems, waterproof coatings, biomimetic systems, advanced thermal insulation materials)
Incombustible, fireproof fabrics (textile burning materials, flammable adjustment mechanism of action, FR for fibers and textiles)
Geotextiles (geotextiles functions, applications, preparation, properties and testing)
Medical textiles (classification, fibers for honey. Tex., Design, applications)

Session IV: Sorbents (week 10 to 12)
Basics and principles of the sorption processes (mechanisms of separation of solutes, sorption equilibrium sorption isotherms)
Natural and applied sorbents (absorbents, humic acids, activated carbon, oxide sorbents, zeolites)

Aims

The objective of this course is that the students familiarise themselves with practical application of chemistry in the manufacturing of common and special textiles (new fibres, moisture managemen, aplication of special biopolymers). Student gains awareness of the current state of knowledge on the field of modern textile materials and sorbents.
