Numerical and Statistical Treatment of Experimental Data

To acquaint students with the basic statistical procedures and moderately advanced methods of analytical data processing. Provide introduction to the procedures for securing and managing data quality in the analytical laboratory.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completion of the course will give to students the following benefits:

1. Students will be able to perform basic statistical analysis of the results of chemical analyzes used in analytical practice
2. Students will be abls to apply control procedures used for quality data assurance/quality data control (QA/QC) in analytical laboratories
3. Students will understand the basic methods of processing and interpretation of environmental data and they will be able to apply them in solving of real tasks

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematical statistics and probability in the extent of secondary studies.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction, characteristics of analytical results, calculation rounding, errors of analytical results
2. Statistics of repeated measurements: normal and log-normal distribution, estimations of mean and variance, confidence intervals
3. Significance tests: accuracy, precision, trueness, analysis of variance (ANOVA)
4. Quality of analytical measurements, Shewhart charts
5. Uncertainity of analytical results
6. Calibration methods: Regression and correlation
7. Non-parametric and robust methods
8. Introduction to multivariate analysis
9. Application examples from the environmental data treatment

1. To deepen and complete students' knowledge in the field of statistics obtained in previous studies
2. To acquaint students with the specifics of processing results in the field of analytical chemistry
