Workshop - Product Design I

FSI-YA5Acad. year: 2012/2013

The course is concerned with basic methods and habits that are necessary for the work on a design project. During the semester students are assigned tasks to design products that have a simple function. The design project itself is documented by drawing sketches, plan documentation, perspective views, and a three-dimensional model of final solution. It is expected that students will use digital technologies for visualization and animation at the working out of the current project.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance at lessons, handing over assigned projects by the deadline in a sufficient quality. Presentation of an elaborated project. Design and the level of presentation of each project are evaluated separately.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects and exclusive tasks. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The course objective is to familiarize students with the basic attributes of industrial sketch creation so that they acquire needed habits, procedures and basic skills. The aim is to respect and emphasize technical, operating and technological aspects of design.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in workshops is controlled. Students are required to attend workshops in scheduled hours, work on given projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives any other individual plan. Students have to inform the lecturer in advance about his working-place in the scheduled education time (studio, workshops, modelling room, eventually college dormitory, home, or producer etc.) - absence is not excused without this information. The absences are possible only due to serious reasons, e.g. illness. Unexcused absence may cause the project is not accepted. The total absence greater than 50% (including excused absence) may threaten project acceptance.
