Science of Colour and Light

The makes students familiar with the basic theory of colour and light, used in industrial design. It is concerned with surface and spatial colours, colour combinatorics, colour illusion, significance of light and lighting in designer’s practice.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students should acquire basic principals of the colour perception and they learn to apply this knowledge in design work.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of optics (see „Physics I“ course) and practical work with colours.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: Attendance at exercises, meeting assigned projects deadlines.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on tasks. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

The aim of this subject is learning and mastering the sense of legality and use of the lights and colours, learning the technological structure of colours, and their esthetical effects.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in lectures is recommended. The attendance in workshop education is controlled. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the schoolroom, work on given projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness.

History of using colours, light, and genesis of colour perception;
Theory of light principle, origin of colour spectrum;
Configuration and function of eye, origin of colour perception, theory of colour seeing;
Lightning and perception of colours (reflection, absorption);
What is a colour? mixing of light and pigment colours;
Assortment of colours, nomenclature of colours, grey spectrum and colour circle;
Physical perception, psychological and symbolic effect of colours, colour association, colour and space;
Colour contrasts;
Expressive aspect of particular colours;
Colour tuning of, principle of colour harmony, colour combinations;
Pigments and their attributes, kinds of paints and enamels, paint thinners, vehicles etc.;
Colour and paper, colour in press, method of saturation of colour measure, kinds of papers;
Coating and spraying of paints, airbrush, coloration of different materials.
