Engineering Metrology I

The course is designed to familiarize students with the basic classification of measuring instruments and their applications. Attention is focused on temperature measurement (thermometers, contactless temperature measurement, temperature field measurement). Pressure measurement. Tensiometry, measurement of residual stresses. Measurement of moisture, analysis of gases. Measurement of the level of material stored in storage tanks. Measurement of length by non-destructive methods. Application of ISO Standards to metrology. Measurement of lengths, basic methods for checking geometrical quantities, inspection of gear wheels. Introduction to the techniques of measuring non-electric quantities, design of detectors, processing and recording of the values measured.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course will provide students with the knowledge of some basic measuring methods that can be applied in individual technologies. Students will learn how to solve metrology problems and how to apply their knowledge in practical operation conditions.

Prerequisites

A good grasp of engineering technologies. Basic knowledge of the structure and properties of materials. The principles and SI units applied in the measurement of temperature, pressure, and length (Physics).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions of awarding the course-unit credit: participation in laboratory work. Examination: the knowledge of basic measuring methods will be tested, inclusive of their application to practical problems. It is a written and oral examination.

Aims

The objective of the course is to teach students the basic measuring methods and to apply them creatively to individual technologies. Special attention is devoted to practical activity, sensitivity of individual instruments with respect to their application in quality management and the application of ISO standards.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Absence from experimental exercises has to be made up for. If there are more cases of absence, an individual programme will have to be worked out and defended before the course-unit credit can be awarded.
