Standardization in Medicine

The subject provides the students with understanding of medical technology from the viewpoint of technical standards and metronomy. It is not the aim of the subject to present to them all norms currently in effect . It is focused on problems that can be encountered and have to be solved to avoid putting the patient’s health at risk.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Graduate of kecture will be qualified to:
-description of group helth equipment
-have knowledge of dangerous effect electricity
-have knowledge special terminology which is using at field of medical instrumentation
-have an ability to explain why standardization at healt technology is indispensable
-be able to description of basic requirement for health technology from point of wiev its functionality and safety

Prerequisites

Medical diagnostic technology. Therapeutic and protetic technology. Imaging systems in medicine.

Course curriculum

Standards for medical apparatus - the basic norm, electric security, standards for partial devices (their relationship to the basic standard), problems with medical gases, radiation security, metronomic problems, the approval process for medical apparatus.

Aims

To provide the students with the ability to tackle problems associated with the design of medical apparatus, installation and operation, and to consider the issues to be taken into account when purchasing such devices.

1. Standards for medical devices -the basic standard.
2. Electric security of devices – diagnostic devices using electrodes on the patient’s body.
3. Electric security of devices – therapeutic devices using electrodes on the patient’s body.
4. Standards for apparatus operated in the operating theatre.
5. Standards for devices and operation of intensive care unit.
6. Standards for medical gases – requirements, distribution and requirements for devices where the gases are used.
7. Standards for the workplace using ionizing radiation for diagnostics.
8. Standards for the workplace using ionizing radiation for therapy
9. Standards for devices operated in biochemical and hematological laboratories.
10. Metronomy as related to verification of the technical parameters of devices operated in practice.
11. Sterilization in medicine – basic concepts and standards.
12. Standards for materials used in medicine.
13. The approval process for medical devices – authorized test rooms, statement of agreement and other.
