Lighting systems

Problems about lighting systems, containing information about luminaires, their construction, materials, luminaire classification, their usage, design of reflection areas, lighting measurement, requirement from standards view, calculation of lighting systems, realization of lighting systems, operation and maintenance, control and dimming.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Deeper knowledge from lighting theory, knowledge of methods of lighting system design, knowledge required at lighting technician for control position in luminaire production, lighting systems design, lighting systems maintenance and operation.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Laboratory protocols, home works, final exam with example and theory parts.

Course curriculum

Photometry fundamentals, quantities, relations, units, luminous intensity curves and areas, solid angle, calculation of total flux of luminaire.
Lighting design, calculation methods in general, application of computer software.
Function and classification of luminaires, requirements from technician standard.
Basic types of optical parts, design principles of optical lighting-active parts.
Overview of the most common materials used for luminaire construction.
Lighting sources for luminaires, luminaire requirement for given light sources, electrical accessories and basic construction elements, luminaires warming.
Luminaires protection before pollution and dangerous touch voltage, luminaires classification according to construction and usage.
Lighting measurement of luminaries, data formats used for exchange of photometric parameters of luminaires.
Legislative for lighting technology, laws and directives, standards, introduction with hygienic supervising problems, maintenance and revision of electric lighting systems.
Daylight in buildings, problems of combination of artificial and daylight lighting.
Basic principles of lighting systems control, modern concept of lighting control, intelligent control, and control of lighting systems depending on daylight part of light.
Public lighting, specifics of roads and outdoor areas lighting, operation and maintenance of the wide lighting systems.
Economic aspects of lighting operation, energy audits, assessment of energy performance of the lighting system, the calculations of cost-effective variants.

Aims

Inform students about complex problems of lighting systems, comprise all of the most common aspects from luminaires to lighting systems control, their regulation, operation and maintenance.
