Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students become familiar with english terminology used in the recent communication systems for data, audio and video signals transmission, with basic types of these systems, and with some methods of signal processing used in these systems such as source and channel coding, synchronization or modulation.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level and english knowledge on the pre-intermediate level are required.

Block diagram of communication system. Source encoding of speech, audio and image. Digital data compression. Encryption and decryption, block and stream ciphers, public-key cryptography. Channel encoding, block and convolutional channel codes. Baseband modulation, line codes. Intersymbol interference. Equalization. Detection of binary signal in noise, matched filter. Bandpass modulations. Amplitude, frequency and phase modulations. Digital modulations MPSK, MFSK, MQAM, and their derivations. Synchronization, carrier frequency and phase recovery, symbol timing recovery, frame and network synchronization. Multiple-access techniques. Spread spectrum systems. Telephone network. Mobile telephone systems. Telephone service. Radio and TV broadcasting, DAB, DVB. Wireless data communication systems. Optical communication systems. Satellite communications. Local Area Network. Perspective of the communication technology.

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with english terminology used in the recent communication systems for data, audio and video signals transmission, with basic types of these systems, and with some methods of signal processing used in these systems such as source and channel coding, synchronization or modulation.
