Integrated Management Systems

The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with basic principles of modern management of enterprise efficiency, principles of system and statistical thinking so that they would be able to apply them within a whole company as well as within partial processes. It provides basic knowledge on European quality policy and complex systems of quality assurance in the context of environmental protection and occupational safety and health protection in the EU as a condition of placing products on the market. It presents the systems of technical standards important for definition of system interfaces (organizations, products). The obtained knowledge is a prerequisite for mastering follow-up courses of the branch and understanding of the significance of total quality of all processes for acceptability of the final product.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Understanding the principles of total quality management, legal norms of enterprise management (Czech Republic, EU) oriented at competitiveness. Knowledge of the procedures of obligatory and optional conformity assessment. Knowledge of the legislation significant for complex quality management (technical, system ISO 9000, ISO 14000, OHSAS 18001,etc.). Knowledge of the basic principles of means and tools of management.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on enterprises and their management, knowledge of technologies, knowledge of mathematics and physics in the extent of bachelor-level studies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course unit credit requirements:
Participation in the seminars. Elaboration of a semestral work on a topic announced at the beginning of semester. Presentation of one report and undertaking of three tests on topics announced by the lecturer during the semester. In case the student fails to meet these requirements, the lecturer can set an alternative condition in reasonable cases. If a student gets more than 50 points for activities during a semester, he/she will be suggested a mark and he/she does not have to take an examination. Other students have to take an examination (written and oral). Exam evaluation: excellent (91-100 points), very good (81-90 points), good (71-80 points), satisfactory (61-70 points), sufficient (51-60 points), failed (0-50 points).

Course curriculum

Lectures:
1. Concepts and terminology. Definition and dimension of quality (product complete). Customer focus, determination of priorities, process approach. Integrated management system. Development of approaches to management of companies and organizations. Six Sigma, Lean Production.
2. Total quality management. Management through marketing, leading personnel to quality, total engineering solution and planning of quality (QFD, FMEA). Environmental and safety limiting conditions of management systems.
3. Conformity assessment. Obligatory and optional conformity assessment. EU and Czech legal milieu.
4. Technical standards. Quality as a concordance on the interface of processes. Advantages of normalized interface. Systems of technical standards. International Standards ISO 9000. Conformity assessment in accordance with ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 (certification of integrated management system).
5. Tools of quality management. Metrology. Operation analysis. Psychological and sociological studies. Ergonomics studies. Applied statistics.
6. Tools of quality management. Data collection, flowcharts, histograms, Ishikawa diagram, Pareto analysis, regulation diagrams, regression and correlation analysis. Brainstorming, affinity diagrams, matrix diagrams etc.

Seminars:
A plan of seminars is prepared annually according to the number of students. During the seminars, student‘s reports on selected topics are presented and discussed. The range of topics correlates with the topics of lectures.

Aims

Students will be made familiar with the main principles and tools of modern quality management in the context of environmental protection and occupational safety and health protection and also with the basics of the community law of EU.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is compulsory. Each student must take part in all scored activities. An alternative assignment may be set in order to approve the course and to award the course-unit credit.
