Diagnostics of constructions

FAST-BI52Acad. year: 2012/2013

The task of construction diagnostics by carrying out a building-technical survey within maintenance, repair and reconstruction of structures.
General methodology of diagnostic procedures, flow diagram of structure survey.
Application of destructive and non-destructive testing methods by surveys, non-destructive tests made more accurate, evaluation of results with statistic methods.
Use the full range of radiographic non-destructive testing on real or virtual construction (check reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, a combination of radiographic and magnetic methods for determining the reinforcement in structures)
Defect and failure diagnostics. Deformations and cracks in constructions monitoring, fatigue and degradation of material. Methods of long-time structure controlling.
Seminary paper concerns the proposal of detailed progress of structure-technical survey of the construction.
Laboratory practice with individual task, demonstration of test procedures on models and buildings.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain knowledge from theoretical and practical realization of diagnostic methods used for material properties detection in various types of structures. Based on acquired knowledge the students will be able to choose the optimal method for given diagnostics task.

Prerequisites

Goniometric functions, units of physical quantities and their transfers, the fundamental laws of physics, mechanics of bodies

Co-requisites

Structural mechanics, elasticity theory of solids, the effects of static and dynamic loading, deformation of element, elements of concrete structures

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Educational activity is provided lectures and laboratory sessions.
Lectures consist of an explanation of basic principles, implementation methods and techniques of evaluation.
During laboratory exercises students perform practical measurements (ultrasonic testing of bores, radiography, test masonry, etc.) and evaluate the test results.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The condition of the completion of course is attendance at the laboratory sessions, submission of writing reports and advocacy of group seminary paper on the topic: Draft of survey of the building.
