Electromagnetic Compatibility

Introduction to EMC, history, basic concepts and problems. EMI signal sources, natural and man-made EM environment, disturbing signals. Coupling mechanisms of EMI signals, arts of coupling, radiated emission. Filtering, isolation and suppression, EMI reduction techniques, EMC filters. EM shielding, shielding effectiveness, magnetic shielding, cable shield. EMI measurements, EMS testing, methods and instruments. EMC standards and regulations, international, national and military standards. Selected EMC problems. Practical training in EMC university test laboratory. Excurssion to the professional EMC test laboratories.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The graduate is able (1) understand basic the fundamentals of EMC, basic concepts and problems of EMC. He or she is able to identify (2) EMI signal sources of disturbing signals, coupling mechanisms of EMI signals, arts of coupling, radiated emission. He or she is able to design (3) filtering, isolation and suppression of Emi signals. The graduate is able to use (4) techniques for EMI reduction, EMC filtering, EM shielding, shielding effectiveness, magnetic shielding and cable shield. The graduate is able to (5) provide EMI measurements, EMS testing and used methods and instruments according to EMC standards and regulations, international, national and military standards.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, practical laboratories and and an excursion to the professional workplace.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Tests written during semester and laboratory exercises (30 points), final exam (70 points).

Course curriculum

1. Introduction to EMC, history, basic concepts and problems.
2. EMI signal sources, natural and man-made EM environment, disturbing signals.
3. Coupling mechanisms of EMI signals, arts of coupling, radiated emission.
4. Filtering, isolation and suppression, EMI reduction techniques, EMC filters.
5. Surge protective devices noise filters. Gas discharge tubes, varistors, special Zennerovy diodes, PIN diodes.
6. EM shielding, shielding effectiveness, magnetic shielding, cable shield.
7. The shield coaxial cables. Coupling impedance cable shielding. Measurement of interference with dummy load LISN, with voltage and current probes.
8. Measurements with the absorobing clamps. Measurement of spurious signals by antennas. Types of antennas. Measurement in the open air, in shielded chambers.
9. Absorption anechoic chamber. Measuring receivers and spectrum analyzers. Peak, quasi-peak and mean value detection. Electromagnetic compatibility and testing. Criteria of elekctromanetic compatibility resistance technical equipment.
10. Simulation of interference on the supply of high-and low-energy broadband pulse, ESD, RF Field test of resistance. Special test chambers.
11. Standardization in the field of EMC. civilian and military standards. Czech and European standards EN, IEC.
12. Special EMC: protection and management of spectrum, EMC communication systems, medical EMC, automotive EMC.

Suppression techniques, fine and hard limiter components.
EM shielding, shielding effectiveness, electrical and magnetic shielding, cable shield.
EMI measurements, methods and instruments for conducted EMI measurements.
Radiated EMI measurements, antenna measurement, open area and anechoic chamber measurements.
EMS measurements and immunitty testing, methods and instruments for EMS testing.
EMC standards and regulations, international, national and military standards.
Selected EMC problems, spectrum management, biological aspects of EMC.

Laboratory exercise

Syllabus

Monitoring of the ambient electromagnetic environment by using the EMI receiver and EMC spectrum analyzers.
Measurements of conducted emissions from a PC by using the Line Impedance Stabilizing Network (LISN). Using of quasi-peak, average, as well as peak detection.
Mains voltage dip and mains short interruption immunity testing of a TV receiver.
Investigation of the fast transient, and surge immunity of a personal computer.
Demonstrations of an ESD gun by air and contact ESD immunity testing.
Excurssion to the professional EMC test laboratory in Vyškov.
