Music Directing 1

Components of a music recording, the timbre of musical instruments, dynamic continuity, the conformity of tempos of individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording. Different forms of notation of musical pieces of various musical styles and genres, team work, getting familiar with the work of a music director, sound master and artist, the exact definition of problems in terms of mutual communication. Psychological aspects of the work of a music director, ways to communicate with the artist and the estimation of maximum performance.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- distinguish the components of music recording
- analyze and describe the timbre of musical instruments,
- distinguish dynamic continuity, the conformity of individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording,
- work in a team,
- describe the psychological aspects of a music director’s work.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required as well as musical intervals, scales and modes, chords and basic harmonic connections, and timbres. Students who enrol on the course should be able to analyze song regularities, assess the implications for the interpretation, describe musical instruments in terms of creating tone and techniques, and create instrumentation study for combinations of instruments.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Exercises provide the explanation of case studies and team work in music studio.
Participation at exercises is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Credit is given successful demonstration of knowledge in interview.

5. – 7. The timbre of musical instruments.
8. – 10. Dynamic continuity, the conformity of tempos in individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording.
11. – 12. Working in teams, musical director, sound master, artist, the exact expression of problems in terms of mutual communication.
13. Psychological aspects of music direction, ways to communicate with the artist, estimation of maximum performance.

Aims

The aim of the course is to teach students to distinguish components of music recording, the timbre of musical instruments, dynamic continuity, the conformity of tempos of individual takes and the continuity of the whole recording, team work, getting familiar with the work of a music director, and a sound master. Focus is put on the familiarization with the content of the work of a music director in contrast to the activities of an audio master, especially in the artistic point of view of this profession.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

To obtain the credit it is necessary to complete at least 10 exercises during semester. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
