The course focuses especially on the following topics: Introduction to database systems. Relational database system. Data types, organization and storage of data, work with data, indexes, fundamentals of SQL language queries. Analytical services. Security and data protection.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire basic knowledge regarding database systems including up-to-date trends in the database technologies development. They will master fundamental principles and skills in the work with SQL language namely the queries creation and their interpretation. They will acquire the knowledge of the data protection with respect to the security as well as legislation, including the problems of an electronic signature.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Windows XP operating system and competence in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, PowerPoint).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises promote the practical mastery of subject presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit:
1. Active participation in the exercises and control of elaborated partial tasks in three pre-set deadlines – max. 100 points. Total number of points for awarding the course-unit credit has to be higher than 50.

Course curriculum

Topics of the workshop is as follows:
Introduction to database systems, database as an information source
Relational database management system, data types, work with data and structures indexes
The query language SQL
Simple queries, grouping queries (aggregate functions, cross queries, pivot tables, special cases of clustering tasks)
Summaries using data cubes
Presentation of the results of queries
Legislation governing the protection and security of data in the Czech legislation
Electronic Signature

Aims

The main objective of the course is to make students familiar with the basic questions related to database systems and data access. Also dealt with is the basic theory of relational database systems as well as acquirement of practical skills in data access and use of databases as a source of information. Also discussed are the topics related to the data security from the IS/IT security point of view as well as from the point of view of legal regulations valid in the Czech Republic.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Control of results of independent work on the assigned tasks. In case of excused absence from seminars, the teacher can set an additional condition if appropriate, usually elaboration of supplementary task.
