Specialization: Movement Activities by Health Limitations

The course provide the students of an overview of the specific movement needs and limits of the individual weakened by a disease, injury, surgical treatment, congenital handicap etc. The course includes theoretical classes focusing various types of health challenges from the perspective of human biology, as well as the organization, offer and accessibility of physical activities for individuals who need these. Practical classes are also included in the course, dedicated to field trips to specialized institutions and specialists, to workshops where the students will have the chance to try several adapted physical activities themselves, and to seminars providing time for discussions about learned knowledge, ideas and suggestions applicable in the field of physical activities in health-challenged individuals.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After the course, the students will become competent to:
• assessment of the degree of the health challenge with respect to physical activity, suggestion for further examination by a specialist
• recommendation and providing information about further organizations and counseling in physical activities for health-challenged individuals
• assessment of the biological, psychological, social and economic limits of physical regime in health challenged individuals with respect to their leisure activities as well as work environment
• recommendation of appropriate alternative physical activity or adaptation with respect to present possibilities and limits of the individual
• project management of commercial treatment of physical activities in short- and long-term events and stays for individuals and groups

After the course, the students will be able to:
• recognize various types of health challenges
• assess the suitability of physical activities in particular health challenges
• recommend further counseling possibilities
• organize short- and long-terms educational, treatment or experience-based events and stays employing physical activities in cooperation with other institutions focusing individuals with health challenges
• search the literature and other sources of information in physical activities in health-challenged individuals to update their qualification

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit requirements
• 80% active participation in practical classes, participation in discussions, fulfilling individual work tasks, demonstration of individual study
• meeting 75% points in total in 3 pen-and-pencil tests

Exam requirements
• 2 oral questions about theoretical background of the course
• presentation of partial area of the project (project is worked out by 3 to 4 students)

Project focus:
 sport event/stay for individuals with health challenge
 support for barrier-free BUT
 support for civilization diseases prevention – motivation to active transfer of inhabitants from the perspective of urbanism
 other focus

Project will be worked out by a team of 3 to 4 students who divide the roles between themselves: project manager – coordinates the project, knows the objective, purpose, expected benefits, potential weaknesses and risks etc.; financial manager – deals with the financial issues of the project, makes calculations, budget, prognosis; marketing manager – is responsible for promotion, communication, PR, HR; specialist adviser – checks the effectiveness of the project, knows the field and the targeted population etc.;

During project presentation, each team member presents his/her are by means of oral presentation using Power point presentation, flip-chart, hand-outs etc.; it depends on the team members if their presentations are uniform or not;

The duration of the entire presentation must not exceed 20 minutes. The exam may be public (i.e. 2 to 3 teams may present their project in one exam).

Both parts of the exam must be evaluated at least E, to get final evaluation.

Aims

The objective of the course is to prepare students for specific work with the individuals with health challenges in the field of physical activities with respect to the appropriate choice of physical activities as well as the organization, economic and legislative issues.
