Course detail

Information Systems and Computer Networks

FSI-GIFAcad. year: 2013/2014

Information systems are becoming a more and more important part of the manufacturing systems. The course has two parts. The first part is focused on the basics of the theory of information, coding of messages and the basics of information transfer. The second part deals with the structure of modern information systems, their design and application in the manufacturing and production systems. It includes practical examples from the industry. The students also learn about the technical part of IS - computer nets.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with the use of IS in manufacturing enterprises, concept of IS, and the methodology for its implementation. Students will acquire theoretical knowledge of and basic practical experience with databases and computer nets.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have knowledge of:
- basic structure of manufacturing enterprises,
- basic knowledge of information flow in manufacturing processes,
- computer literacy,
- basic knowledge of computer networking.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is conditional on the following:
Participation in practicals and working out of semester work.
Examination: The exam has a practical and a theoretical part. In the practical part student solves simple database problem. Successful solving at least half of the problems in the practical part is necessary. The theoretical (oral) part tests student’s knowledge.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the information flow in a manufacturing enterprise - specify requirements for information handling, methods used to cover these needs, use of information systems. Classification, inner structure and rules for development of IS are also discussed. The emphasis is placed on databases as a fundamental part of IS, as well as the communication in IS trough computer nets.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at obligatory lessons is checked and only substantial reasons of absence are accepted. Missed lessons can be substituted for via solution of extra exercises.
