Quality in Laboratory and Control Practice

FCH-MCO_LKPAcad. year: 2013/2014

Lecture is divided in three parts.
First part of the lecture focuses on foodstuff sampling, preparation of food matrix for final analysis and on ways of sampling and sample storing. Also characteristics of final analysis with its requirements and determinations and sample preconcentration will be examined. The lecture will be concluded by an overview of SPE, MSPD, SPME, PSE and microwave destruction.
Second part deals with result statistical processing and error description.
The last part explains basic concepts (work quality in food laboratory, quality audit, product agreement proof etc.) and gives essential information about quality inspection in the Czech Republic and the EU including ISO standards.

Prerequisites

Elementary knowledges of mathematical statistics, basic knowledges of instrumental analysis.

Co-requisites

This course is teached in the final year of graduate studies. Therefore, it isn't any prerequisite for further study. It is only support for graduates entry into the practice.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 1 teaching hour per week, Seminar - 1 teaching hour per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam has a written and an oral part.
The written part includes questions focused on background of lecture.
Conditions for qualify in oral exam is successfuly complete of the written test. The oral part of the exam will demonstrate degree of acquire of the lecture.

Course curriculum

I: sampling
II. extraction by a liquid (liquid-liquid extraction)
III. extraction by a solid phase
IV. preparation (decomposition) of samples for elemental analysis
V. validation
VI. control charts; reference material and certified reference material; standard operating procedure (SOP); good laboratory practice (GLP)
VII. standards; quality manual

Work placements

This lecture is not linked to any work internship.

Aims

The goal of the course is to familiarize students with job requirements at an accredited laboratory. I.e. to work well on three basic levels: laboratory, interlaboratory and company level. Laboratory level includes the right and quality preparation/processing of samples for analysis. Inter-laboratory level relates to using of certified/validated metods. Corporate level includes coverage of all laboratory procedures and methods of the quality manual.
