Laboratory Classes in Environmental Analytical Chemistry

Acquisition of knowledge on environmental analytical chemistry focused on system of sampling and basic analysis proper. Students will collect samples from environment, isolate selected analytes from given matrix and perform their determination by selected analytical procedures. They will design standard operating procedures (SOP) for sampling and analysis. They will have a clear idea on the necessity to follow the QA/QC system regulations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Acquisition of practical experience in aplication of classical and modern methods used in environmental analysis; handle sampling system of matrices, notably soil and water.
1. Student need donations of land according to a written plan of collection and will perform field sample to sample laboratory; familiar with water consumption (instantaneous sampling, continuous sampling).
2. Student will gain experience with isolation of hazardous elements from the soil matrix using several types of techniques leaching agents
3. Student can handle isolation techniques of organic pollutants from soil and water analysis of xenobiotics, pesticides and biologically active substances (sonication methods, PSE-extraction) solvent under elevated pressure, solid phase microextraction-SPME, solid phase extraction-SPE)
4. Student learn to use processes for the purification of the extract and the correct procedures for preconcentration using a rotary evaporator
5. The student applies the methods learned in the course Instrumental and structural analysis to the analysis of environmental matrices (AAS, GC / ECD, GC / FID, GC / MS, HPLC / DAD, UHPLC / DAD, HPLC / MS)

Ability to work in a chemical laboratory on the acquisition of practical skills in the subject Practical instrumental and structural analysis

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 5 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Elaboration of laboratory reports, elaboration of seminar project on topic assigned and its presentation
Graded credit obtained on the basis of protocol processing and approval of the teacher, seminar work and its presentation. Students will be classified to the approval of all the specified conditions of the course.

3. Preanalytical treatment of collected matrixes to laboratory sample
4. Isolation of selected groups of priority pollutants
5. Analysis of analytes of inorganic origin in collected abiotic matrixes
6. Analysis of organic pollutants in collected abiotic matrixes

Block 1
1. Design sampling abiotic matrixes using conventional procedures (soil and water)
2. Design abstractions abiotic matrixes with new non-traditional methods - passive sampling
Block 2
1. Preanalytical treatment of collected matrixes to laboratory sample(soil)
2. Isolation of selected priority pollutants based on inorganic and organic pollutants
Block 3
1. Analysis of inorganic substances in samples abiotic matrices (mercury, lead, kamium, nitrates)
2. Analysis of organic pollutants in samples of abiotic matrices (PAHs, PCBs, pharmaceuticals, musk compounds, pesticides)
Block 4
Example of the calculation of metrological parameters (LOD, LOQ, recovery, robustness); calibration options, methods of identification and quantification of uncertainty calculations
Block 5
processing of seminar paper and her presentation; essay is a presentation of the practice of laboratory tasks including evaluation and interpretation of results - will be carried out through a power point presentation

Aims

Obtaining the necessary practical experience in the analysis of environmental matrices. Ability to perform trace analysis of organic and inorganic contaminants.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

100% attendance at practices; submission protocols, presentation of case studies

Recommended optional programme components

Student can attend lectures from various companies on the use of priority laboratory techniques for trace environmental analysis; may be involved in work related to solution projects of science and research
